How to Boost Your Confidence at Work and the Dojo

Do you ever feel anxious before a big meeting or event? Perhaps you are going to do a big presentation to the board of directors, or maybe pitching to a group of investors on your big idea. Suddenly, you are besieged with worry. You stop believing in yourself, and all you can think about is all the things that will go wrong. When we lose confidence in ourselves, we become anxious. When people become stressed beyond their tolerance point they are unable to perform at their best.

One of the best ways to build your confidence to become more assertive is to do something you are good at. It could be a sport, a hobby, or other interests. Doing something you enjoy that is important to you makes you feel good. These enjoyable activities allow you to get lost in time, what referred to as the flow state. Entering this state allows you to relax, forgetting all the events troubling you at the moment.

Whenever I hit the mats to train some Brazilian jiu-jitsu, my stress instantly melts away. All my mind chatter disappears as I get lost in the techniques. It’s beautiful feeling. I believe I wouldn’t have the health physically or mentally if it weren’t for the martial arts. What brings you the most joy in your life?

Make a list of these things you absolutely love to do and enjoy. That way when you are hit with a stressful situation you can turn to one of the items on this list to help you stay grounded and connected.
